Meet Licorice, this sweet girl was living a pretty rough life as an outdoor community cat. However, she was still loved and cared for by a group of animal-loving neighbors. Then tragedy struck, kids took a baseball bat to sweet Licorice (allegedly). She was found dragging her back legs through the neighborhood to get to safety. Her caretakers found her and sent out a plea for help, in the meantime, they helped her get warm and fed in an outdoor shelter. An ARC staff member saw the post and started planning to save this poor, suffering girl. ARC sent a team to pick her up, but that was no easy task! This feisty little girl had dragged herself out of her shelter! So, with the help of the caring neighbors, they searched all her normal hangout spots, without much luck. Then finally, she was found hunkered down in one of their backyards!
The ARC team, prepared for anything, came with leather gloves, a trap, and a net, but Licorice just melted into loving arms when she was picked up and carried. Through all the trauma and pain, Licorice was brave enough to still love and trust humans! Once back at ARC, Licorice was set up in a warm comfortable cage, and clearly she really enjoyed the food!First thing Monday morning, ARC coordinated with the vet to get her in for x-rays and assess the extent of her injuries. ARC soon learned that she had a fractured pelvis on both sides and her tail was completely disconnected from her spine. The vet confirmed that these injuries are consistent with those from being hit with a bat or similar object. And, these injuries can be life-threatening, all she needs to do is move wrong and a bone fragment can cut an artery or even sever her spinal cord. If we act quickly, the damage can be repaired with surgery, probably multiple surgeries. Licorice has been so brave so far, we know she has the will to not only survive, but to THRIVE!
