Adoption Policies

Published on: Aug 20, 2011
The Animal Refuge Center screens all prospective pet adopters before adoption. Adopters must be prepared to give references and pass a “good pet owner” check before the application will be approved. If for example you give us a reference for a veterinarian when we inquire as to your responsibility in keeping up with spay, neuter, vaccinations and other prevention, and the veterinarian gives a poor report or can not find you in their records, the application will be denied.
We have had serious issues in the past with Military adoptions. Nearly every pet we adopted to Military here in the Fort Knox area before 2011 was RETURNED to us once it was time for the military family to move to a new duty station!! This goes hard against our goals to provide these pets with Forever Homes, not to mention the anger, frustration and disappointment we feel when these animals come back. The animals are also distraught about being abandoned after believing they were family, so we are more dedicated than ever in placing them in a permanent home.
Were these same people to drop off their children after each duty station, there would be a social outcry like you wouldn’t believe. In light of this we are enforcing our Adoption Screening policies, for we are NOT a Rent A Pet agency, and never will be. Please note the policies below and deeply consider your commitment to adopting a pet before you fill out our adoption application at this link: Adoption-Questionnaire.
