Sponsor Program

petsHomeless cats. Homeless dogs. There really are not enough homes for them all. The streets and shelters are filled with them. And the statistics are so dreadfully depressing. The hard facts are these: Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats).
There are not enough homes for them all.
The Animal Refuge Center has seen a lot of homeless pets go in and out its doors since 1989. Time and again, we meet people in our community who recognize us, greet us, say, “I adopted So-and-So from you such and such years ago! What a wonderful pet!” Most times they still have that pet, but in rare instances they adopted that pet from us many years ago and speak of them fondly…and just once in awhile they tell us with pride that the pet just turned 20 or something!
Our role as a No-Kill Shelter has always been challenging. Back in the early days of ARC, No-Kill was unheard of, we were told it was a foolish idea by some, it would never work. But we proved them all wrong. And that brings us to this.

Sponsor2About Our New Sponsor A Pet Program
We created the Animal Refuge Center Sponsor Program sometime in the mid-90s. The theory was based on programs of a number of charitable organizations, to allow people who wished to support our shelter to pledge $11 per month toward care and maintenance of the pet or pets of their choice.

It was successfully implemented with full intent of helping overcome that Number One setback the naysayers said would be the reason we went under, why No-Kill shelters would never work: The Unwanted.
Some pets come in off the streets and from homes that don’t want them. There are reasons why many of these pets will never be adopted.

Sponsor3Some are just very old. Some are crippled. Some are blind, feral, have health problems, some street cats contract FIV or Felv in those lonely days and fearful nights under the streetlights as they struggle to find enough food to get them through another day, through absolutely no fault of their own. Unless they are absolutely near the end, they come to us, and based on their circumstances find their place at ARC where so many have to learn to give and receive affection.

Those photos in the slideshow at top of this page are not our pets. Those are stock photos: some from America, Greece, Russia, Poland. See, no matter what people try to say about the pet overpopulation problem, the problem is everywhere. Now, the slideshow below, these ARE our pets. THIS is personal.

We can’t change the world all by ourselves. It takes one person at a time, each and every day, doing their part, and one by one we will get them home…or make sure their home at ARC lasts them for the rest of their lives.

All you have to do is go to our Pets For Adoption page or browse the slideshow of unadoptable pets below to select the Sponsor Pet that tugs at your heart. Or, if you want to help but can’t afford to make a long-time commitment, go to our Donation page, and know that in whatever way you are able to give, you have saved a life.

The success of the Animal Refuge Center’s Sponsor A Pet Program has stood the test of time, and is more important to our work now than ever before. Maybe you don’t have room to adopt another pet at this time. Some of these pets may never, ever find their Forever Home, and the Animal Refuge Center will be the only home they ever have. A lot of these pets have waited awhile, and pets who were previously thought unadoptable have found their home with a stroke of luck. With your Sponsorship, you can help keep a homeless pet safe, warm, fed and loved until they do.
To begin your sponsorship, select a picture above from the slideshow of our list of Senior and Unadoptable pets. There are a few, but more will be added every day. The Unadoptable pets have their own pages set up; just click the Sponsor button on the chosen animal’s page, pay the sponsorship, that’s it. Once you click that Sponsor button, you will be redirected to Paypal, where you see something like this:

PayPal securely processes payments for Animal Refuge Center, Inc.. To complete your checkout using PayPal, please log in. Learn more.

Adoptable pets are different. Browse our Pets For Adoption pages, select which ever pet speaks to your heart, pledge your sponsorship and save a life. Once your Pet Sponsorship pledge is paid, you will be redirected to our Thank You page, where you will have the opportunity to drop us an email and let us know that you request a specific pet to sponsor.

Hi, I love animals. If I could I would adopt a cat and maybe another dog. But currently I live with a German Shepard already, in a town house. I would like to sponsor an animal and want to know if we could visit the animal we sponsor.

Yes, absolutely!!! When you get your sponsor packet, you get a description of your sponsor pet, and visiting is always encouraged! That way both sponsor and pet know the love they’re giving and getting is real, and not an impersonal photo exchange program.
