Our new website is still under
construction at the moment. But oh, what progress we’ve made! So many
new and cool things have been added to this site since September, and
there is much more to come. Now our supporters can pay their pet
sponsorships online. Applications and selections for you to select your
own special sponsor pet, and donation forms will be following shortly.
The ARCShop is up, where you can buy Animal Refuge Center branded
merchandise, and we’re not finished with that, either. Over the coming
year we plan to add to our merchandise and put other designs than the
ARC logo on it for your family and pets.
We’ve got Spay and Neuter Options for families in need. “Fur Keeps – Get
It Right The First Time” from our Petfinder.com sponsor, helps you
tailor your lifestyle and situation for the kind of pet you’re looking
for (and vice-versa), so you and your new pet can handle any situation
and reduce those heartbreaking pet returns.
So much more to come. We just need to remember to keep blogging and keep
you up to date on what’s going on! We’ll be working on our latest
newsletter around March 20, 2010, and if you’re not on our mailing list
you will be able to download your own PDF copy of Voices From The ARC!
You can easily drop in and ask questions, though! Whatever’s on your
mind, if you need an answer to anything at all, just ask your question
at the appropriate page and we’ll answer it for you! Remember, your
questions also help immensely toward building our Frequently Asked
Questions pages, and we’re here to help! Ask away–but remember this site
is moderated, so objectionable material won’t be approved.
Our shelter is at 20 years and counting as of last year, and we’re
looking forward to the next 20. As always, thank you so much for all
your support!
Kentucky has one of the weakest laws on
cockfighting in the country. A recent HSUS
investigation showed uniformed state police at a
cockfighting pit in Laurel County, KY. Our
shocking footage shows why Kentucky needs an
upgraded cockfighting law and a clear directive to
law enforcement to arrest animal fighters.
Please call your state representative
Charlie Hoffman (502) 564-8100 and urge support for
H.B. 169. You can say: “My name is [your
name] and I’m calling from [your town]. As a
constituent, I’m calling to ask you to support H.B. 169,
legislation to make cockfighting a felony.” After you call, send
a follow-up message. Thanks for all you do for
animals.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE PETS,
THIS IS A TRUE STORY. FOR THOSE WHO DON’T, IT’S A TRUE STORY.
The following was found posted very low on a refrigerator door.
Dear Dogs and Cats: The dishes with the paw prints are yours and
contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food.
Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a
claim for it becoming your food and dish. I do not find it aesthetically
pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack.
Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me won’t help as I
will fall faster than you can run.
I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry
for it. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure
your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they
sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other,
stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking
tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to
maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.
For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by
some miracle, I beat you there and manage to shut the door, door
shut, do not claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw
under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the
same door I entered. I feel that I must point out that I have been using
the bathroom for years – canine/feline attendance is NOT required!
The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the
other dog or cat’s butt. I cannot stress this enough.
Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message
on the front door:
TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:
(1) They live here. You don’t.
(2) If you don’t want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That’s why
they call it ‘fur’-niture.
(3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
(4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who
are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don’t speak clearly.
Dogs and cats are better than kids because they:
(1) eat less,
(2) don’t ask for money all the time,
(3) are easier to train,
(4) normally come when called,
(5) never ask to drive the car,
(6) don’t smoke or drink,
(7) don’t want to wear your clothes,
(8) don’t have to buy the latest fashions,
(9) don’t need a gazillion dollars for college and
(10) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children!
Everything I did in my life that was worthwhile I caught hell for.
Here’s a huge rousing thanks to everyone who made today’s Santa Paws
fundraising event a great success! Sponsored by our friends at PetSmart on Hurstborne
Lane in Louisville, Kentucky, the fun started at 11 am and wrapped up
around 4 pm. Animal Refuge Center staff and volunteers also provided
holiday cheer with a bake sale, coffee, hot cocoa and tea for PetSmart shoppers and
pet parents bringing their pets to get their photo taken with Santa!
First off, a big huge thank you to Ben and Sheryl Emerson, who agreed
to be Santa and Helper for us this year! Both had a great time working
with the customers and their pets, and Santa had the kids convinced,
too! (One nervously giggling youngster tried to back away from Santa and
ran over his little brother…)
Bake sale!
Everyone loved the bake sale provided by Animal Refuge Center staff
and volunteers! Inge Edwards, Marimac Smythe, Pat McKinney and Sarah
Faulkner greeted customers and sold goodies. Even PetSmart employees
agreed that the food was great!

Kids and pets are a natural
fit. Children tend to demonstrate an interest in animal welfare, but
healthy relationships between kids and animals don’t always come
naturally and can be hard work. Ubisoft is proud to sponsor
“Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month” and support the ASPCA through its new Petz
line of video games, which recognizes the importance of teaching
kids about responsible pet care and humane treatment of animals. Petz is
a full series of pet-simulation video games for the Nintendo DS™
system for kids ages 6-12 that allows them to build a unique two-way
relationship with their virtual pets. Kids can help their animals grow,
watch as they develop personalities, experience memorable moments and
share experiences with their friends.
The ASPCA will be featured in two ways
starting in November. Visit petz.com to play fun free mini-games in
November and show your support at the online “cause house.”
Ubisoft is also releasing a new line
of Petz games that will be in stores this holiday. If you buy Petz®
Nursery, Petz® Dogz® Talent Show, or Petz®
Hamsterz® Superstarz at Walmart, you’ll get adorable trading
cards with “fun facts” from the ASPCA! At participating Walmart stores,
while supplies last.
A few highlights:
In Petz® Nursery, players can care for
and bond with a variety of the cutest newborn animals, from puppies to
polar bears. Help them grow into strong and healthy animals! (In stores
Nov. 11. ESRB Rating: EVERYONE with Comic Mischief.)
In Petz® Dogz® Talent Show,
kids can learn to care for their dogs, discover their personalities, and
train them in a variety of fun and challenging activities to turn them
into talented Petz. (In stores Nov. 17. ESRB Rating EVERYONE with Comic
Mischief.)
In Petz® Dolphinz Encounter, kids can
play as a new member of the Ocean Rescue Team and explore the
seas and oceans by rescuing dolphins and other sea creatures. (In stores
Oct. 27. ESRB Rating: EVERYONE.)
These
video games are simulations. The types of animals featured and ideas
for play do not necessarily reflect the ASPCA’s policies. For
more information on responsible pet care, visit aspca.org/pet-care.
